Leo Visser made this calendar page for January to March 1923, and it's got a vibe that's both old-world and super graphic. The dragons and birds are laid down in a bold, almost chalky way, and the colour palette is grounded in earthy browns, rusts, greys, and blues. I like the way the monster looming over the calendar grids gives a sense of the passing of time as something ominous! Looking closely, you can see how the texture isn't trying to hide itself; the layering and smudging become part of the story. The physicality of the medium brings out an emotional quality, and the overall concept becomes more resonant. It reminds me a bit of Odilon Redon, who was also playing with mystical themes.
