In this artwork called “From I Hate Mickey Mouse,” by Samira Eskandarfar, images emerge through disruption. It’s all trial, error, and intuition. I can sympathize with Eskandarfar. What was it like to create? What was she thinking when she made it? I imagine her reaching for a bright red, brushing it across the background. Then, the figures emerge, cut out, pasted in. Color creates the mood, the gestures communicate meaning. The bright green fingernails are playful and almost shocking against the monochromatic figures and roses. What does it mean to hate Mickey Mouse? Eskandarfar is in conversation with other artists through time, inspiring creativity, and exchanging ideas. Painting is an embodied expression which embraces ambiguity and uncertainty, allowing for multiple interpretations.
