Railroad 

M.C. Escher created this artwork "Railroad" using brush and ink. The railroad tracks, receding into the distance, represent a symbol of industrial progress. Yet, there is a psychological tension: it might be a symbol of potential for advancement, or perhaps a sign of relentless, dehumanizing modernity. Railways often appear in art and literature as emblems of modernity. Think of Monet’s "Gare Saint-Lazare" series, celebrating the dynamism of modern life, or, conversely, the railway in Edvard Munch’s "The Scream," where the tracks amplify a sense of alienation. In Escher's work, the stark contrast between the dark, looming foreground and the distant, almost spectral cityscape generates a feeling of unease.
