Curatorial notes

Jo Bezaan created "Ingang van Putten", an etching, around 1923. The eye is drawn into the composition by strong diagonal lines, beginning with the road in the foreground and continuing towards the structures in the distance. The textures and tones established by closely grouped hatched lines define the forms and add a striking sense of depth to the image. Bezaan's print is an exercise in contrasts. The dark, dense areas of shading are juxtaposed with the white of the paper, especially along the roadway. Light and shadow play an essential role in shaping the scene. This deliberate use of light serves not just to illuminate but to construct the very forms themselves. In particular, note the stark geometry in the roofs, which adds a layer of abstraction to the rural scene, contrasting with the soft lines of the foliage. This etching is an intriguing dialogue between representation and abstraction, inviting us to consider how Bezaan merges form and place.
