Curatorial notes

Editor: This sketch by Prince Hoare, residing at the Tate, features a draped female figure. It's got a tentative, searching quality, doesn't it? What do you see in it? Curator: It's as if Hoare is whispering a classical ideal onto the page. The flowing drapery, the serene pose...it evokes ancient sculpture, but with a breathy lightness. Do you sense that fragility too? It is quite moving. Editor: Yes, absolutely. So, he’s aiming for classical, but capturing something more vulnerable? Curator: Precisely. Perhaps it's the ephemeral nature of drawing itself—a fleeting thought given form. It's a whisper of immortality, knowing it will fade. Editor: That's beautiful. I'll never look at a sketch the same way again. Curator: Nor will I. It is quite profound, isn’t it?
