Louis Lozowick made this lithograph print called *Duet-Peru* sometime during his long career as a painter and printmaker. Imagine the artist bent over a stone, carefully applying a greasy crayon to capture these two musicians, one with a drum and the other with a pipe, maybe a quena. It’s a subtle, almost ghostly image, full of texture. The figures seem to emerge from the very surface of the paper, which is achieved with closely worked lines and hatched marks. I wonder if Lozowick was thinking about early photography, its soft focus and tonal range, while making this print? The gritty black ink reminds me of the urban landscapes he was known for. You can see the hand of the artist so clearly here, the pressure of the crayon, the direction of the marks. It makes you feel connected to the person who made it and think about their process and how the work of one artist links to another over time.
