Curatorial notes
Reinier Vinkeles created this vignette of a flood and severe weather using etching. Vinkeles lived through a period of significant political and social change, including the rise of revolutionary ideas that would eventually end the Dutch Republic. The print captures a moment of nature’s raw power. What does it mean to be at the mercy of uncontrollable forces? In the 18th century, ideas about natural disasters were intertwined with religious and moral interpretations. Some viewed catastrophes as divine punishment, while others saw them as natural events to be understood through science. How did these interpretations shape the emotional responses to events like floods, and how did artists like Vinkeles capture and reflect these emotions in their work? The artist invites us to reflect on our relationship with nature and its overwhelming force.
