Curator: This is Camilla d'Errico’s "capuchina," created in 2017. It’s an acrylic painting, exemplifying her style, which blends pop surrealism with contemporary portraiture. Quite striking, isn’t it? Editor: Absolutely. My first thought is…well, it’s like a candied nightmare. Those big eyes and the almost disturbingly pastel skulls create such a strange tension. Curator: The skull is a potent symbol, of course, representing mortality, but here they’re almost…whimsical? Perhaps it’s d’Errico’s way of softening the blow of life's harder truths. Editor: Whimsical and melting, or emerging. The goo could be a metaphor for a variety of fluids—bodily, or otherwise! Maybe this figure is drowning in thoughts of decay? Curator: Symbolically, colors matter, too. Notice the rainbow of skulls – each shade traditionally evokes varied emotions: purple for grief, yellow for sickness... It's as if she is cataloging the experience of sadness itself, yet reclaims these potentially terrifying icons. Editor: A catalog is right. She seems to be drowning in experience itself! Even her milky hair—it drips like melting ice cream. Are we looking at a portrait or an effigy of something intangible, like memory itself? Curator: Precisely! D'Errico's art pulls from this sense of dreamlike realism, inviting us to explore the hidden corners of our minds. It could represent both emotional and psychological states, each uniquely interpreted. Editor: It's as though this figure exists within her own internal world, grappling with these beautifully macabre symbols. The composition alone almost mimics this experience of a rising tide. I almost feel like the artist may also be suggesting our anxieties, perhaps, and that what truly remains with us, will also outlive us. Curator: An astute observation. Art provides a window to the unseen. In exploring "capuchina", perhaps we find pieces of ourselves within d'Errico's delicate balancing act. Editor: That’s beautiful. Like facing our rainbow anxieties and deciding to swim anyway, just as they melt into art.
