Helen Hyde made this print, An Interlude, probably in the early 1900s. The colour palette is muted, but so warm. What feels so inviting about this print is the way Hyde captures this moment in time, almost like a snapshot. This is a print, so everything we’re seeing is the result of layers and layers of ink, built up carefully to create these overlapping shades. It’s such a patient, slow process. I love the way you can almost see the wood grain coming through in the donkey. And how about that donkey itself, with its head hung low, it looks tired from its journey. The children sitting on it are so lively, so full of life, gazing towards the figures standing in the doorway. This print reminds me a little of Mary Cassatt, particularly in the way Hyde captures the intimacy of everyday life. Ultimately, there is a real sense of wonder here, but also one of ambiguity. I always think the best art is that which makes you think, and this print certainly does that.
