Henri Matisse’s Blue Nude III, was made in 1952 using paper cutouts. I can imagine Matisse snipping away with his scissors, intuitively shaping each segment of this reclining figure, allowing the curves to emerge. It's a jigsaw of colour and form. Those sharp, clean edges of cobalt blue against the paper’s soft cream… I can almost feel the texture. It's so interesting to me how the simplicity of form can convey so much. That raised arm—a gesture of relaxation or perhaps of defiance? Maybe he was exploring how to make space with negative space? When you look at this in relation to his earlier painting, you can really see how the work of other painters influenced him, even in this late period. It's as if the conversation of art continues, each artist responding to those who came before. Ultimately, this blue nude is an invitation to see beyond the surface and to engage in our own process of imagination.
