"Boats on the Oudezijds Kolk" by Cornelis Vreedenburgh is a graphite drawing on paper. Look at the pressure on the pencil here, the sharp hatching that creates areas of dark shadow! I can imagine Vreedenburgh with his sketchbook, quickly trying to capture the scene. He has simplified everything into basic shapes, and the linear quality gives it a real sense of immediacy. I wonder, was he standing on the bridge? The viewpoint creates a strong sense of perspective. Look at the water. It's suggested by a few horizontal strokes. I can imagine him thinking about tonal variation, and the way light affects the appearance of solid objects. There’s an economy to the marks, a clarity that reminds me of other Dutch painters like Mondrian, who were interested in reducing their subjects to essential forms. Artists are always talking to each other, aren’t they? Each artwork offering new ways of seeing and thinking about the world. A conversation that spans time, offering inspiration and inviting endless creative possibilities.
