Cornelis Vreedenburgh made this drawing of a village scene with a church tower, using pencil on paper. The drawing is sparse, with much of the paper left untouched, giving a sense of incompleteness. The composition divides roughly into two halves. On the right, a dense cluster of strokes forms the church tower and adjacent buildings, which are rendered in layered, angular shapes. In contrast, the left side features a more abstract configuration of lines and geometric forms, alluding to structures in the distance. The contrast between the detailed right side and the abstracted left creates a dynamic tension. The verticality of the tower dominates the composition. This orientation emphasizes a reaching towards the sky, a common symbolic gesture in religious architecture. Yet, the unfinished quality of the sketch prevents a complete reading, encouraging us to consider the interplay between presence and absence, form and void. The sketch remains open to interpretation, inviting viewers to engage actively with its forms and to complete the scene in their imagination.
