This fashion plate titled 'Très Parisien, 1930, No. 11,' was printed anonymously, and captures a moment of interwar style in simple lines and flat colour washes. There’s an appealing, casual approach to colour here, with pale blues, pinks and creams offset against the brown paper the image is printed on. It's reminiscent of Matisse's cut-outs; confident but not overworked, full of joie de vivre! The eye is drawn to the white coat of the figure on the left and the careful detailing of the seams and lapels, which are rendered as simple outlined shapes, suggesting a sense of volume and depth with very economical means. You can almost feel the weight of that satin... This piece reminds me of the work of contemporary artist, Jean Julien. Both artists have the ability to evoke a mood or a feeling with very few lines, embracing a form of art which, like life, embraces ambiguity over fixed meanings.
