This is an illustration of a thoroughbred stallion, made by Glenisson & Van Genechten. It is printed on paper, using line engraving, a process that involves incising an image onto a metal plate, which is then inked and pressed onto the paper. The image's fine lines and subtle gradations of tone are achieved through the engraver's skill in varying the width and density of the engraved lines, giving form to the horse's musculature and flowing mane. The addition of color hints at the animal's vitality. Line engraving was a popular method for creating detailed and reproducible images, widely used for scientific illustration, and commercial prints. In many ways, it was a precursor to photography. This print reflects a broader social interest in animal breeding and equestrian culture, and served to disseminate knowledge and appreciation for these magnificent creatures. Considering the artistry and labor-intensive nature of line engraving, one can appreciate how the techniques of making inform the artwork's cultural significance, blurring the boundaries between craft, fine art, and commercial production.
