Hendrik Krock created this male model study in grey pencil around the turn of the 18th century. The figure is built from the bottom up with a clear, stable base of simple lines defining the ground and his posture. From this foundation, Krock assembles the figure in layers of hatching, the lines becoming denser to define the darker tones of his form. He uses form to show the model in an intimate, reflective pose. The overall effect destabilizes any singular reading of the figure. The tension between the sketch's precise lines and the model's dynamic posture disrupts conventional readings. This disruption allows viewers to reflect on the complex interplay between form and the human condition in early modern art.
