This black and white photograph was taken by Thomas Roma sometime around when he was born in 1950. What gets me about this image is the woman's face, eyes closed, maybe in prayer. It makes me wonder, what was Roma thinking when he took the photo? Was he drawn to that moment of interiority, the way her face seems to glow from within? I find myself thinking about Garry Winogrand, another street photographer. He was interested in the chaos of the everyday, but Roma seems to be after something quieter, more contemplative. There's a stillness here that invites you to pause and reflect. It reminds me of the way a painter might use light to create a focal point, drawing your eye to the essential. Ultimately, it's a moving exploration of faith, community, and the search for meaning in the everyday.
