Wojciech Fangor made this painting, called Koło, which means 'wheel' or 'circle' in Polish, with soft, diffused marks, and it has a very limited palette. I can only imagine Fangor in his studio, patiently building up those layers, coaxing the colors to blend. I mean, look at those fuzzy edges. It makes me think about those color field painters like Rothko and Newman, but also a bit like a Bridget Riley Op Art piece too. The way the colors interact is wild. The warm oranges bleed into the blacks, then into the cool blues, creating this kind of pulsating optical effect, like a portal. It's like Fangor’s inviting us to stare into the abyss, but in a chill, meditative way. Ultimately, Fangor is showing us that painting is not about answers, but about the questions that emerge when we just let the materials speak. His experiment becomes our experience, our contemplation, our own personal journey.
