Dmytro Kavsan made "Need Love" with what looks like ink and maybe watercolor washes on paper. The drawing feels like an act of searching, of trying to find form, just like love. Look closely at the surface. The washes are transparent and thin, in contrast to the assertive lines that describe the figures, and make you feel like you’re seeing something that’s coming together in real-time. The linear nature of the work, where lines are left exposed, not blended or hidden, allows you to see the construction of the image. The splashes of blue, green and yellow seem almost provisional, like color tests. They run like a tap left dripping, and the overall impression is of a work in progress, a sense of something unresolved. Kavsan's work feels adjacent to that of artists like Klee, for its lightness of touch, and also its dreamlike quality. I think, like them, Kavsan isn't so interested in answers. He's more curious about the questions.
