Curator: Gazing at this bust, one immediately senses the weight of history and perhaps even a touch of defiance. Editor: Yes, there's a stark intensity. I'm struck by the rough texture. Almost feels like the clay remembers its origins. Curator: Indeed. This is Jacob Epstein’s study of Haile Selassie, dating from sometime in the mid-20th century. It resides here at the Harvard Art Museums. Selassie, of course, was a pivotal figure in Ethiopian history and a symbol of African independence. Editor: The furrowed brow and intense gaze project a palpable sense of authority. I can almost feel the weight of responsibility he carried, and the determination. Curator: Absolutely. Epstein captures Selassie's iconic status, his role as a modernizing leader and spiritual figure is palpable in this sculpture. The eyes especially, seem to hold a deep wisdom. Editor: It’s interesting how Epstein uses the rough surface to convey power and strength. I wonder, was this intentional or simply a testament to the speed of creation? Perhaps a little of both. Curator: It’s a potent image, resonating with echoes of Ethiopia's past and its aspirations for the future. Editor: A compelling portrait, leaving us to contemplate the complexities of leadership and legacy.
