Curatorial notes
This small photograph, "Portret van een jongen op een speelgoedpaard", was created by A. Böeseken. The sepia tones and the stillness of the subject, a young boy rigidly posed on his toy horse, lend a certain solemnity to the image. The composition is simple, the subject centered, allowing us to focus on the details and texture of the scene. The horse itself, a construct of wood and leather, becomes a signifier of childhood aspirations, a symbol of power and adventure reduced to a domestic scale. The very act of posing for such a portrait transforms the child into a miniature adult, a concept explored by structuralists who study how cultural codes and roles are represented through visual media. The photograph’s muted palette and tight framing amplify the feeling of a moment captured and preserved, suggesting how early photography served to codify social identities and familial bonds. The materiality of the photograph, its small scale and fragile nature, also functions as a sign—pointing to its role as both an intimate keepsake and a formal representation.
