Emanuel Eichel created this print, titled "Landscapes with bridge and columns," sometime in the 1700s using etching techniques. The two pastoral scenes depicted, one with classical ruins and the other a humble chapel, seem to capture the mood of the Enlightenment period. During this time, institutions such as the academy played a central role in shaping artistic tastes. The landscape genre, particularly, offered artists space to contemplate the relationship between nature, history, and the divine. We see, on the one hand, a romantic vision of the past, signified by the ruined columns and archways which evoke the grandeur of antiquity. On the other hand, we see a simple, humble church building, framed by the natural world, as a symbol of the era’s spiritual values. These images, therefore, reflect the cultural values of the time. Art historians consult primary sources like letters, diaries, and critical reviews to understand the social and institutional contexts in which art is made. This helps us appreciate how artworks engage with, reflect, or even challenge the norms of their time.
