Gabriel Huquier created this print called 'Katachtige in landschap met fruit en gebonden halmen' – or 'Feline in a landscape with fruit and bound stalks' - sometime in the first half of the 18th century. This print, now held in the Rijksmuseum, offers us a glimpse into the visual culture of the Dutch Republic. The image blends elements of classical and pastoral aesthetics, seen in the architectural backdrop and the inclusion of natural elements like fruit and foliage. This combination was very fashionable. The feline is perhaps a symbol of domesticity and luxury, reflecting the values of the wealthy merchant class that dominated Dutch society at the time. Prints like these circulated widely and influenced taste and design. By studying inventories, auction catalogs, and design books, we can uncover how images like these shaped ideas about art and society. The seemingly innocent scene reflects the social and economic structures of its time.
