Curatorial notes

This photograph of the Binnenplaats van het oude Beyart klooster te Maastricht was made anonymously, using the wet collodion process. This technique, popular in the mid-19th century, required the photographer to coat a glass plate with light-sensitive chemicals, expose it in the camera while still wet, and then develop it immediately. The resulting image, a negative, would then be printed onto paper. The final result gives us incredible detail, though because of the technical constraints of the process, the tones are often muted, and the scenes had to be static. The collodion process, while innovative, was labor-intensive and demanded expertise. It represents a fascinating intersection of science, art, and craft. In this photograph, we see not only the architecture of the old monastery, but also a testament to the photographer’s skill in manipulating materials and processes. It reminds us that every image, whether seen as art or documentary, is the product of human ingenuity and effort.
