Sol LeWitt’s work presents us with a constellation of lines in red and blue. These lines, emanating from different midpoints, immediately evoke a sense of order, almost a cosmic harmony. The arrangement of lines, especially as they converge and diverge, reminds me of the ancient motifs of radial symmetry, seen in mandalas across various cultures. These sacred diagrams served as maps of the cosmos, meditation tools, and symbols of wholeness. The use of color also intrigues me. Red, often associated with passion, energy, and sometimes aggression, contrasts beautifully with the cool, calming blue, which typically represents the spiritual, the infinite, or the melancholic. The opposition of these colors creates a dynamic tension, which, when combined with the geometric regularity, invites us to contemplate the balance between order and chaos, emotion and intellect. It’s as if LeWitt has tapped into a primal, shared memory of how we perceive and symbolize the world around us.
