This street artwork by Jerome Mesnager is painted directly onto a wooden fence, incorporating an existing no-parking sign into the composition. The paint application is loose and gestural. You can almost see him flicking the white paint onto the surface, bringing it to life. I imagine Mesnager walking around the city, looking for surfaces where he could leave his mark. With just a bit of white paint, he turns this functional object into something poetic. The ghostly figure seems to be emerging from the wood grain itself. Is he walking into the future or stepping out of the past? It reminds me of other artists working in public spaces, like Keith Haring, finding ways to connect with people through simple, universal images. Painting allows artists to speak to each other across generations, through mark-making and the manipulation of materials. Each gesture carries intention, and the artist's presence remains long after they've moved on.
