This photograph, "Watermolen bij Voorst" was taken by Richard Tepe. Looking at this image, the gray scale gives it a very modern feel, don't you think? What strikes me most is the water itself. The photographer, Tepe, used the movement of the water to create lots of tonal variation. This makes the water almost seem to be alive. It's like he's playing with light and shadow, but instead of paint, he's using the water's surface. Then, there's the structure of the mill. The wooden planks and thatched roof give it an almost tangible weightiness, like a very solid mark made on the page. It reminds me of some of Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographs of industrial structures – though here, there’s a greater sense of play and movement. Ultimately, what I love about art is the way artists build on each other, borrowing ideas and methods, but always bringing their own unique eye.
