Alfred Freddy Krupa made ‘Two boats on Korana’ with decisive sweeps of ink across the paper. Just imagine him there, his hand moving quickly, responding to the flow of the water, each brushstroke capturing the essence of movement. You can almost feel the boat gliding on the water and the wind picking up. The ink bleeds and spreads in a variety of tones of grey and black. There’s a wonderful freedom in the strokes, a kind of confident spontaneity. The horizontal line creates stability, it’s an anchor in an otherwise fluid space. It reminds me of the work of Franz Kline or even some of Cy Twombly’s calligraphic gestures—artists who knew how to make a mark that speaks volumes. Painting connects us to a longer history and shared language. It is a conversation across time, inspiring our creativity.
