Alfred Freddy Krupa made this painting, "Two boats on Kupa river," using broad gestural marks in black ink. Can't you just imagine him, brush in hand, spontaneously capturing the scene before him? The way the ink bleeds into the paper gives the impression that the artist worked quickly and intuitively. I imagine that he was trying to capture not just what he saw, but what he felt. Look at how the dark, sweeping lines define the boats and the river. There’s a raw energy in the marks, a kind of confident abandon, like Franz Kline meeting traditional Japanese calligraphy! The white of the paper is as important as the ink, creating a sense of space and light. It is so exciting how each stroke communicates feeling, intention, and meaning! It shows how artists are always in conversation, exchanging ideas, and inspiring each other’s creativity. Painting is embodied expression, allowing multiple interpretations!
