Roy Lichtenstein made "Look Mickey" with oil on canvas, and wow, it’s something else! Those thick, flat colors and bold outlines, they just scream comic book, don't they? It’s like he's saying, "Hey, art can be fun, too!" Looking at the way he lays down the yellow, it's not about blending or shading; it's just bam!, flat color. It makes you think about process, about how he’s simplifying everything to its most basic form. Take Donald Duck, for instance. He's a chaotic mess of blue and white, but Lichtenstein nails his panic with these huge swathes of colour. There's this crazy tension between the high art of painting and the low art of comics. Lichtenstein makes you question what art even is, and I love that. It reminds me a little of Magritte, who also messed with expectations. Art is just a conversation, an ongoing, silly, and serious conversation.
