This is a reproduction of ‘De gezindheden door Christus geoordeeld’ by Antoine Wiertz, held here in the Rijksmuseum. Wiertz was a Belgian artist working in the 19th century who created artworks in response to social and political issues. Trained in the classical tradition, he often pushed against its boundaries in order to express his radical, often socialist, views. His art confronted the conventions of his time. In this print, a book displays an image of Christ seemingly judging people who are suffering in a hellish, chaotic setting. Wiertz used religious and historical allegories to convey his messages about humanity, justice, and moral responsibility. The intense contrast between light and dark invites an emotional and spiritual response to the piece. While the image is not overtly political, the theme of judgement and suffering, and their relationship to faith reflects the societal concerns of his time. Wiertz urges us to empathize and consider the ethical dimensions of human existence.
