This is a photograph of the Zuidzijde van de Sint-Lambertuskerk te Rosmalen made by an anonymous photographer in 1910. You know, looking at this sepia image, I imagine the photographer carefully framing the south side of the church, probably early in the morning. I wonder, were they thinking about the passage of time, the enduring presence of the church against the ephemerality of human life? The soft light delicately etches the architectural details, the gothic windows standing in contrast to the stark geometry of the building. This is a quiet image, where the solemnity of the subject matter is echoed in the subtle gradations of tone. It seems to me that the artist is in conversation with other image makers from the past, those who explored light and form with such sensitivity. There’s a sense of reverence and curiosity that speaks to something deeply human.
