Vilhelm Lundstrom made this drawing, Siddende kvindelig model, with pencil on paper. The image feels like it’s emerging and dissolving right before our eyes. See how the heavy marks build the figure’s mass, but the face is blanked out? There’s this interesting contrast between detail and a kind of erasure. I can imagine Lundstrom working on this, stepping back, squinting, and then adding more marks. The pose is so casual, so familiar. It makes me wonder about the relationship between the artist and the model. What were they thinking, feeling? Did they talk? Maybe Lundstrom was chasing something in particular; the way light drapes across the figure, the tension in the pose, or maybe just the sheer act of looking and trying to translate that onto paper. This reminds me of work by other artists like, Matisse who were also interested in the female figure, but more in the tonal play, the way the light falls. To me, this drawing feels like a meditation on looking, seeing, and recording.
