Victor Pasmore made this painting, titled 'The Cloud,' in what looks like watercolour or diluted ink. The tones are soft and smudgy, like the sky on a rainy day. Look closely, and you will see how the forms emerge from the ground, not quite solid, more like an atmospheric effect. The colour seems to bleed into the paper, giving it this ephemeral quality. I love how Pasmore embraces the unpredictable nature of the medium, letting the colours flow and mingle, creating unexpected shapes and textures. Notice how the dark cloud on the left seems to hover, its edges blurred. It is a moment frozen in time, a fleeting glimpse of the sky. Pasmore reminds me of Gerhard Richter in that way. Both artists are interested in how paintings can capture a sense of transience and ambiguity, where seeing is more about feeling. Like clouds, meanings shift and change.
