This undated print, "Uitzicht op paleis vanuit vestibule," or “View of a Palace from a Vestibule,” comes to us from an anonymous artist. The palace and its grounds, viewed through an arched vestibule, were the domain of the elite, a stark contrast to the lives of the majority. The artist, whose identity remains unknown, invites us to consider the power dynamics inherent in such landscapes. The figures in the foreground, presumably members of the aristocracy, are leisurely enjoying the splendor, while the meticulously designed gardens and architecture speak to the control and resources commanded by the ruling class. The print offers a window into a world of privilege, prompting us to reflect on how spaces of beauty and leisure can also be spaces of exclusion and social stratification. How might we democratize access to beauty and leisure, ensuring that such experiences are not limited to a select few?
