Johannes de Bosch created this drawing of two walkers by a gate ruin using pen and brush in gray ink. Notice how the artist used traditional drawing materials to create the image. De Bosch paid close attention to the effects of light and shadow, and he has made a compelling composition using very simple means. Look closely and you can see how each layer builds upon the other, creating a sense of depth and perspective, and contributing to the overall romantic mood. What sets this work apart is the artist's attention to the materiality of his chosen medium, with its inherent qualities of texture, weight, color, and form. These elements are just as important as the subject matter in understanding the work's full meaning. It challenges traditional distinctions between fine art and craft.
