Ambrogio Lorenzetti painted this fresco of the countryside sometime in the 14th century. Notice the angel floating above the landscape, carrying a scroll. This figure, a personification of security, promises safety to all who live under the rule of law. This idea of security, personified by an angel or a divine messenger, echoes through art history. We see it, for instance, in Roman depictions of Pax, the goddess of peace, holding an olive branch, a symbol of prosperity. Consider how this iconography of peace and prosperity has been passed down through history, shifting in meaning as societies evolve. The presence of this figure touches something deep within us, a primal desire for safety and order. It is a wish, an eternal striving for a world where the fields are fertile, trade flourishes, and the roads are safe. But this pursuit is never linear, is it? The promise of the angel cycles back through the ages, resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings in our ever-changing world.
