Reinier Willem Petrus de Vries made this drawing, Kader, with what looks like ink on paper. There's a stillness and precision to the way the artist has formed the outlines, the shapes, and the balance. I can imagine the artist carefully plotting out the points and then joining them with a steady hand. The anchor and the sunburst motifs have been captured in a decorative frame, which reminds me of wallpaper, and in turn recalls the work of William Morris, but also ancient Minoan art. There’s something about the crispness of the lines that makes you think of a well-designed logo. The paper looks aged, too, and the ink has a slight sheen, giving it a sense of depth. It’s so interesting how artists continue to reinterpret motifs and symbols, passing them down through generations!
