Editor: Here we have an engraving from 1857 called "Two citizens and a soldier in seventeenth-century clothing." I'm immediately drawn to the clothing; it seems very theatrical and staged. What strikes you when you look at this print? Curator: Indeed. What we see represented is not simply clothing, but a performance *of* clothing, if you will. Look closely. What symbols jump out at you, consciously or unconsciously, when viewing the garb? Editor: Well, the soldier’s musket and the gentleman’s riding crop certainly project power and status, perhaps aspiration, as they stand a little apart from the domestic scene. The woman rummages through a chest or trunk; is she meant to be trapped in that box, defined only by her relationship to the chest, and to domesticity? Curator: Precisely. Notice how those symbols contribute to a larger narrative, or perhaps reinforce pre-existing cultural narratives of gender and power at the time it was created, but perhaps also at the time the clothing represented was worn. Editor: It’s interesting how clothing styles and materials take on new meaning in retrospect, or in the present! Are these figures participating in historical reenactment? Curator: It may not necessarily be historical reenactment. The imagery points more to the romanticized past, imbued with nostalgic longing and cultural memory, not just in clothing, but also social and cultural norms of that time. Does that make sense? Editor: Yes, it really does. I hadn't thought about the difference between documentation, representation, and reenactment. Thanks! Curator: My pleasure! Every viewing provides opportunity for reassessment. This is precisely why cultural objects hold their resonance, because, as we can see, their value shifts over time.
