This gelatin silver print, “Movie Premiere—Hollywood”, was made by Robert Frank sometime during his life, 1924-2019. It’s all about the contrast of light and dark, isn’t it? The way the bright, almost fluffy fur collar pops against the dark dress. I find myself wondering about the person wearing it – what were they thinking? Were they as lost in thought as they appear to be? There’s something so detached about the whole scene. The woman looks away from us, and her gaze is directed toward something unknown. I keep wondering about Frank, too. I imagine him, camera in hand, almost like a fly on the wall, capturing this candid moment. Like he was composing a painting but with a camera. The composition feels very considered, very deliberate, almost like a scene from a movie itself. It makes me think of other photographers, like Garry Winogrand, who were also masters of capturing fleeting moments of everyday life. There is something of a painting in this fleeting moment, after all.
