Reinier Vinkeles created “Lente” using pen and gray ink in 1769. The artwork invites us into a garden scene that reflects the social hierarchies of the 18th century. The drawing presents a neatly ordered garden where class distinctions are subtly rendered through dress and activity. The woman in the foreground, perhaps a caretaker, stands apart from the elegantly dressed figures in the background, drawing attention to labor versus leisure. Vinkeles captures a moment where the natural world is consciously shaped and molded, akin to the social structures of his time. Notice the architecture which frames the scene; it not only structures the space, but our understanding of how society was structured at the time. The artist subtly critiques the artificiality of courtly life through his meticulous depiction of nature tamed by design. Vinkeles evokes a sense of both admiration and critique towards the era’s values, revealing how personal emotions can be intertwined with social commentary.
