This linen damask cloth with hawthorns was designed by Chris Lebeau; I love how the whiteness on white creates this subtle, almost ghostlike surface. It's like the piece is breathing. The texture, achieved through the weave, gives depth and almost a sculptural quality. Think about the labor, the handiwork involved in creating this pattern. It's not just about the image but also about the process. And the grid! Look how the grid anchors the whole design, like a foundation. It's a subtle reminder of the underlying structure that makes the visible pattern possible. This piece reminds me a bit of Agnes Martin’s grids, but softened and made domestic. Both artists share an interest in quiet repetition, but where Martin is all about the sublime, Lebeau brings us back to the everyday, elevates the quotidian. Art is such a conversation.
