Curatorial notes

Isaac Israels made this drawing of a seated nude woman with ink on paper. Look at how Israels applied his marks; it's all about process, about feeling the form through the speed of the line. The thin, quick lines feel almost tentative, yet they build up to create a powerful sense of volume and weight. Notice the density of marks around her head, contrasting with the sparser, more flowing lines that define her back and legs. It’s as though Israels is mapping out the contours of her body, feeling his way through the pose. That scribbled head is so full of energy, it's like a storm of thought contained within that small space. I can't help but think of Willem de Kooning when I see this. Both artists have a way of capturing the raw energy of the human form, embracing ambiguity and open-endedness. Art, like life, is an ongoing conversation, full of questions and possibilities.
