Lech Jankowski made this diptych in 2020, and the layering in the painting really gets me thinking. Imagine Jankowski building up this textured surface, a kind of cosmic soup in violets, ochres, and greys. It feels like a primordial landscape, doesn’t it? Then the geometry enters: small dark squares in the top register, like windows, and below, what the title calls "12 mástiles de remo," masts or oars, each a small rectangle, pulling us forward. There's a pause in the title—I wonder what that's about? It makes me think about the act of painting itself. It's a conversation, right? Jankowski sets up a problem, then tries to solve it, but in solving it, new problems emerge. What’s so striking about Jankowski's work is his conversation with other painters, this shared language across time, inspiring and challenging one another. And it keeps on going, this back and forth.
