Lech Jankowski made this painting called "curtain above the sea", but when, I'm not sure. There's a kind of searching, probing quality in the marks he makes that feels very present. Looking at the painting, you get a real sense of its surface, its textures. It’s a real ‘thing’, you know? There’s a physicality to it. I see a lot of scraping and layering, almost like the paint has been distressed. Up in the top right, the colours look as if they have been applied thinly and wiped away to create a sense of depth. It’s a bit like Rothko, but with more grit, more materiality. This work feels like a conversation with artists like Gerhard Richter, where process is as important as the image itself. It invites a lot of questions. There's no answers here, just a space to wander in.
