Jacopo Leonardis’s “Landscape with Women and Putti by Statue” depicts a scene filled with classical symbols and motifs. At its heart stands a statue, reminiscent of Venus, goddess of love, around which women and putti gather, evoking themes of fertility and abundance. The putti, or cherubic figures, are particularly striking. These winged infants can be traced back to ancient Roman art, where they represented amorini, symbols of love and desire. Over time, these figures were absorbed into Christian iconography, transforming into angels, messengers of divine love. We see their echoes in Renaissance paintings, adorning religious scenes with an air of innocence. Leonardis masterfully employs these symbols to tap into our collective memory. The women and putti engage our emotions at a deep, subconscious level. We recognize the timeless human desires for love, beauty, and connection. This image is an example of how symbols are constantly evolving, resurfacing, and taking on new meanings throughout history.
