Pat Lipsky's In Memoriam C.G. is a meditation made through color, surface and square geometry. It's a process of building up, one block at a time. Look closely, and you see that the painting is made up of many small squares, each a slightly different shade. The paint is applied thinly, almost like a stain, and the surface has a matte, velvety quality. There’s a physical presence to the texture, yet everything is toned down, quiet, measured. The individual marks aren’t concealed, but the process is subtle and meditative. It reminds me of Agnes Martin, another painter who used grids to explore ideas about stillness and contemplation. Art's like a conversation across time. It's not about fixed meanings, but about embracing ambiguity, a space where multiple interpretations can coexist.
