Piet Mondrian created "Composition with Grid VII", a watercolour and ink on paper, sometime between 1916 and 1919. The canvas is set at a 45 degree angle, and this rotation immediately introduces dynamism to what would otherwise be a stable grid composition. The slightly irregular, hand-drawn grid segments the picture plane, and the muted palette of pinks, blues, yellows, and greys soften what would be the rigid geometry of Neo-Plasticism. Mondrian’s use of the grid here is not just a formal device, it’s a philosophical statement. It represents an attempt to distill reality to its most basic, universal structures. The asymmetry and the subtle imperfections, visible in the imperfect lines, suggest an embrace of contingency within the universal order. This work reflects Mondrian’s interest in abstracting from nature to find underlying structures. Note how the rhomboid shape disrupts the conventional square or rectangle, challenging our expectations and prompting new ways of seeing and understanding space.
