Jacob Gole created this engraving, “Two Musicians,” in the Netherlands. Notice how the composition divides the space, setting two figures against a dark, undefined backdrop. The musician on the right, perched precariously on a stool, strums his instrument with fervor. The lines etched here are light, capturing a sense of immediate, joyful sound. In contrast, the figure to the left embodies a different rhythm. His stance is less certain, his movements suggested through heavier, more deliberate lines. One has the sense he is out of step. Consider how Gole uses these differing qualities of line and form to suggest contrasting notions of harmony and discord. Is he inviting us to consider a new way of thinking about space, perception, power or representation? Perhaps Gole challenges us to question what truly constitutes harmony. He offers a space where dissonance might find its own, unexpected resonance.
