Rose Freymuth-Frazier made “Drifting” using paint of some kind, and well, you know, a brush! Look at how she's built up the color gradually, like sediment, letting the light seep through these murky layers. The paint isn’t trying to hide itself here, you can see how she’s worked it, pushing the tones around to create these hazy effects. I love the way she’s laid down these bold marks, especially around the tree line. It’s like she's inviting us to consider the surface of the work, not just the illusion of the landscape. The reflections in the water do so much work to balance the composition. Thinking of the work as a whole, the title, Drifting, comes to life. To me, this recalls the paintings of Whistler, but with a contemporary and grounded edge. Art's an ongoing conversation after all, drifting through time, shifting with each new voice.
