Curatorial notes

Jan Veth created "Als men oud wordt", which translates to "When one gets old", using pen and brush in brown and black ink, over graphite, on paper. During Veth's time, the Netherlands was undergoing significant social changes, with shifts in traditional values and increasing urbanization. In this image, an elderly woman is seated by the fire, deeply absorbed in a book. The scene is intimate, domestic, and quiet. It reflects the cultural values of the time, where age and wisdom were respected, and domesticity was a central aspect of women's lives. The woman’s posture and dress are demure. Veth captures a sense of her solitude and contemplation in old age. The image develops a narrative around aging, knowledge, and the interior life of women within a specific cultural context. There is an emotional dimension to the piece. The image quietly explores the convergence of age, gender, and wisdom, as well as the experience of aging in a changing society.
